 With some exemptions, hiring temporary workers requires employers to apply for LMIA. An LMIA verifies that there is a need for a temporary worker and that no Canadians and permanent residents available to do the job. This document will be issued by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC)/ Service Canada and will enable the Canadian businesses to hire skilled or semi – skilled talent from international markets.

 Once an employer gets the LMIA, the worker can apply for a work permit. To apply for a work permit, a worker needs:

• a job offer letter,
• a contract,
• a copy of the LMIA, and
• the LMIA number.
